Clear, practical steps and smart habits to protect your digital assets

Overview

What this guide gives you

This presentation is crafted to help new and returning Ledger users move confidently from unboxing to daily management while maintaining strong security. You will find clear setup instructions, practical safety measures, and everyday tips that reduce risk without adding friction. The language is straightforward so you can follow along whether you are technical or just getting started.

Preparation

Gather before you start

Begin by preparing a quiet workspace and a reliable device (PC or smartphone) that you control. Download Ledger Live only from Ledger.com/start. Have a pen and durable paper ready for your recovery phrase — avoid storing backups digitally. Disable unnecessary remote access and close extraneous applications to minimize the chance of interference while you set up.

Setup Steps

From powering on to first account

1 Power on your Ledger and follow the on-device prompts to create a new wallet or restore one.
2 Choose a PIN you won’t forget but others couldn’t easily guess — avoid birthdays or simple sequences.
3 Carefully write the 24-word recovery phrase in the exact order shown. This phrase is the single most critical item — losing it means losing access.

Storage & Backups

Protect the recovery phrase

Never photograph or upload your recovery phrase. Ledger support will never request it. Treat it like cash — keep it offline, hidden, and replicated in secure locations.
  • Store the phrase on paper or a metal backup plate for fire/water protection.
  • Consider splitting the phrase between trusted locations, not on the same property.
  • Test restore on another device to confirm backups are accurate (do this carefully).

Day-to-Day Use

Sending, receiving, and verifying

Always confirm the transaction details on your Ledger device’s screen before approving. Malware can alter on‑screen information in apps, but the device’s own display is the authoritative source. When sending to a new address, send a small test amount first. Use Ledger Live to manage apps and accounts; keep firmware and apps updated for security improvements.

Advanced Security

Extra layers for larger holdings

For significant balances, consider adding a passphrase (creates a hidden wallet) or using a multisig arrangement so that transactions require multiple approvals. Both raise security but add complexity: document procedures and ensure trusted co-signers are prepared. Keep software and device firmware current to benefit from fixes and feature enhancements.

Troubleshooting & Support

When things don’t go as planned

If your device fails to respond, try a different cable or port and confirm Ledger Live came from Ledger.com. If your device is lost but the recovery phrase is safe, restore on a new Ledger or compatible hardware. If both device and phrase are lost, funds are irretrievable. For help, use official Ledger support channels only.
